Josh’s Rainbow Eggs a clucking success for teen founder in Macedon Ranges.
Lucy Holmes
Macedon Ranges Leader: July 17, 2017 3:00pm

A HUNGER for pocket money hatched into something a bit bigger for a Macedon Ranges teen. Josh Murray is the Josh’s Rainbow Eggs founder, and sales and marketing director. He is just 16 years old.
Josh’s Rainbow Eggs cracked onto the business scene after a deal between Josh and his mother — if he looked after the hens and did all the work, he could have all the money. Setting up shop at farmers’ markets, and knocking on local supermarket doors, kickstarted Josh’s pocket money making. Seven years down the track, Josh’s Rainbow Eggs are on shelves at Coles, Woolworths and independent supermarkets including LaManna Direct, Foodworks and IGAs.
Being in business can be hard yakka no matter your age, but Josh has successfully taken on the challenge. The business sells 5000 dozen eggs a week.
“It’s not really amazingly hard,” Josh said. “It’s easier than you’d think.”
Josh’s Rainbow Eggs manager (and Josh’s mum) Tamsyn Murray said Josh’s approach to business is what MADE him stand out from the sales crowd.
“He is not afraid to ask,” Dr Murray said.
“Even for grown-ups, sales are hard. But Josh has had so many conversations with customers, and it’s hard to say no to a kid!”
Dr Murray said it is appealing for customers to see a young motivated person doing something different.
Josh’s Rainbow Eggs does not dominate the Year 11 student’s life.
Josh wears his work hat on weekend mornings, allowing time to catch up with friends and play basketball after school.
“I have friends who work more than me!” Josh laughed.
Josh’s Rainbow Eggs has recently scrambled onto the Australian media stage. Josh has featured programs including Channel Ten’s The Living Room and Channel 7’s The Morning Show.
Woolworths Sunbury will host Josh and his some of his hens as part of the Fresh Fair — a celebration showcasing local produce. Josh and his feathered-friends will be at the supermarket on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 2pm.
